Le 20km

You have to say it in French too, "le vingt kilomètres".. actually thinking about it. I'm not sure if it should be "le" or "les", talking about A run (singular) or 20 kilometres (plural)... hmm. 'Le' sounds better I think.

So anyhow, Brussels has a 20km run every year, this year it was on Sunday 30th May and 30,000 people ran it. That's right. Including some people I know! So we went along to cheer them on!

as we arrived at the starting line in the drizzle, this is how to organise 30,000 who are going to run 20km togeter in under 4 hours.
We marched off to the metro and got ourselves nice and early to this spot by the beautiful park at Trevuren, to wait for people to start arriving.
The moment our friend Alex ran past. No, sadly he's not in the photo.

Back to the start/finish line to "meet" them (which actually never happened)... but this is the lovely cinquantenaire park at Merode.

The sun popped out and thousands of people lazed in the sun, ate frites and waffles, and played frisbee in the fountain. :)

A couple of my friends who ran were sponsored for the bursary that supports students at the Belgian Bible Institute (where they study). It's great that they think they raised enough money to support at least one student through a year at IBB.

They'd been training for at least a few months beforehand, and it's got me wondering about the possibility of doing it next year, and maybe raising money for the GBU here, or IFES or something similiar. I stopped and asked myself twice whether I wanted to write this publicly in a blog for all the world to see, but my plan is to start trying to go running more over the summer and when I'm back in Preston, and to see how it goes....

20km we worked out is about 12 and a half miles. So not quite a half marathon.
The atmosphere was so amazing though, and it would be a great achievement, and someting to aim for in terms of my still on going age old resolution of weight loss that I made in January.

Like I say... we shall see..
