"Just talkin' to God"

Me and my friend are trying to listen to sermons together. Or rather, separately. To then talk about them together afterwards. We've decided to start with the Pray Like Jesus series by Mark Driscoll who's one of the Pastors at Mars Hill church in Seattle.

That's the whole of the first sermon audio. You can download the lot for free from the website, just google "Mark Driscoll Sermons".

Anyhow theres this part that just challenged me in the first sermon, here's what he says:

"I learned how to pray and the Holy Spirit dwelling in me, taught me how to pray. The next thing I know I'm just talking to God. Going for walks, chatting with Jesus.God here's what I'm thinking, here's what I'm dealing with, and I'm talking to God. And it's not that I took a class on prayer, it's not that I knew all about prayer, it's that the Holy Spirit was teaching me how to pray...

What I wanna do is I wanna look at how Jesus prayed. And we want to pray like Jesus, that's the point. And when you think about it, JESUS had to pray, if Jesus had to pray, if Jesus prayed, we need to pray! ...

His teaching on prayer was woven through ALL of his teaching, constantly teaching on prayer, and constantly praying, he's weaving prayer throughout all of his life. That's how prayer is to be. In the new Testament we're also told to pray without ceasing. What this doesn't mean is that like some religions where you wanna be holy so you go get like a jedi robe, go find a high mountain, build a hut, sit in the lotus position, drink decaf and say "um". It's not like that! Pray without ceasing means you weave prayer into all of your life, you get up, you're talking to God. You go to work, you're talking to God. You got decisions throughout the day, you're talking to God. You're on your commute home, you're talking to God. You get home with family, friends, maybe your room mates, you're talking to God. Before you go to bed, you talk to God. You're just talking to God throughout the course of the day. Just like breathing. He's alive, He's present, He's there, it just becomes a very natural course of life, that's prayer."

  2. Thank you, Mim--it's all God, cause that was so heavy on my heart, I had to put it somewhere. ;) I'm very happy it blessed you so!

This blessed me, because I've entered a dry season in my prayers. They come from time to time, and they're not fun a'tall. :( How else will we learn that He's with us, regardless of what we "feel"? :) Thank you for sharing this!
