The Lord's Prayer - Driscoll

From the second sermon in the "Pray Like Jesus" series:

"What Jesus is saying is this...

  • you can't say 'God I want your name to be great', if you're dishonouring Him.
  • you can't say 'God I want your kingdom to come', if you're not living as a citizen of that Kingdom.
  • you can't say 'God I want your will to be done', if there's still sin and folly and evil and rebellion and hardness of heart and stubborness and stiffness of neck in your own life.
  • you can't say 'God feed me', if you're not willing to feed others, and be generous and have a heart for the poor and those in need.
  • you can't say 'God forgive me of my sin' if you're not willing to forgive other people of their sin.
  • and you can't say 'God, lead me away from temptation and evil', if you're leading other people into temptation and evil.

The point of prayer is that our will would become aligned with God so that we would become participants in what God is doing. Maybe someone else's praying for their daily bread, maybe God wants you to give them the bread. Other people have sins that they've committed and they wanna be forgiven, maybe you need to forgive them and answer that prayer. There are people who are being lead into temptation and evil and maybe you need to serve them and help them get out. That by our wills aligning with God's will, and us saying 'Dad, your will be done', we have the opportunity to be a blessing and the answer to prayer of others. That's how great Dad is!"
